Before your first drive

I’ll confirm the meeting arrangements and any licence-check details with you beforehand. Bring your provisional driving licence. When we meet, we’ll talk about any driving experience you already have, what you want help with and anything you are unsure about.

What happens at the start?

Get comfortable with the car

We’ll set up your driving position, mirrors and controls, then go through the main things you need to know before moving off.

Start from your level

If you are completely new, we can begin somewhere quieter. If you have driven before, I’ll see what you’ve already covered and build from there.

What might you do on your first drive?

There is no fixed checklist that every driver has to complete. Depending on your experience and how the drive develops, we may work on moving off and stopping, steering, observations, positioning and simple junctions. If you already have experience, we can use the first drive to understand your current driving and agree what needs attention next.

You do not need to arrive knowing everything

A first driving lesson is exactly that — a first step. I’ll explain what we are doing and why, and we can repeat things when needed. The aim is to develop safe habits and genuine understanding, not rush through topics just to tick boxes.

If you feel nervous

That is completely normal for many new drivers. We can keep the first drive straightforward and build up gradually. If nerves are a bigger part of learning to drive for you, see my page about nervous driver lessons and confidence building.

After your first drive

We’ll finish with a clear idea of what went well, what needs more work and what makes sense to cover next. I prefer to earn your continued business drive by drive, so there is no pressure to buy a block of lessons.
